The Life of Gabriel
The story of Marquez began on March 6th, 1982; the day he was born on. Marques was born to a poor family, his parents weren't able to take care of him. Therefore, he was raised by his maternal grandparents. Marquez grew up hearing family stories. He head many stories about his grandfather's time in the military. He heard many tales of his parents adventures during their dating period. Marques was very little when approximately 3,000 banana workers were shot on December 6th by troops from Antioquia. This incident had a lot of effect on Marquez's writing. When Marquez was eight he had to move back to live with his parents and many other siblings due to the death of his grandfather and the growing blindness of his grandmother. Marquez was awarded a scholarship to attend the Colegio Nacional. That is when he was first introduced to literature and poetry. At the Colegio Nacional Marquez met the piedra y cielo ("stone and sky") group, a group of exceptional writers and poets. Marquez studied law at National University of Bogota in 1946. That's when he first started publishing short stories in a liberal newspapers.
Marquez is famous for his magical realism genre. A genre that outstandingly combines fantasies and facts. However, his literary career began with the history of Columbia and Marquez's literary career was sparked, oddly enough, by the long period of political violence and repression known in Colombia as la violencia. He married his childhood sweetheart Mercedes Barcha in 1958. After the assassination of Salvador Allende, the president of Chile Marquez decided to become more active in politics. He wrote to popularize human rights injustices in Latin America. frequently to Havana, where he prepared a book on Cuban life under the U.S. blockade.In 1978 Marques initiated a human rights organization.
Many things happened to Marquez in the year 1981. The fas awarded the French Legion of Honor. Then the Colombian military accused Marquez of being allied with the guerrillas. Due to that he was compelled to pursue asylum in Bogota. Later in 1982, Marquez was awarded the Nobel Prize for his literature. Marquez began a daily newspaper El Otro in Columbia, after being promised safety.
Marquez founded the Foundation of New Latin American Cinema in Havana. Marquez being a magical realism writer gained a lot of fame. He has trademark of having some of his writings to begin from the middle of things and he occasionally uses his own life events and characters in his novels. Sadly due to lymphatic cancer he recently passed away on April 17th, 2014.
